Veterans awarded Quilts of Valor by American Legion Auxiliary in Oxford

OXFORD – American Legion Auxiliary Unit 376 received two very patriotic “Quilts of Valor” from a member in CT. These extraordinary quilts have strict guidelines for the creators to follow before being allowed to carry the name, “Quilts of Valor.”
The intent of the QOV is to cover the veterans touched by war with comfort and healing. New Unit 376 President Terrill Sutton and her officers voted, and two Vietnam-era Army veterans were awarded the quilts. Some significant guests were in attendance making the two events very memorable.
Gary W. Scudder, life member of the American Legion Fort Hill Post 376, and US Army veteran of Vietnam, is now a resident of the Bida Home. On August 3, ALA President Sutton, Past-Presidents Louise Spicer and Roberta Knoll, and some special family held a celebration to award Gary his Quilt of Valor.
Gary’s sister, Joy Lawrence and her husband, Tim, came to the Bida Home for this momentous event. Joy is also a past president of the Chenango County American Legion Auxiliary.
Unit 376 President Sutton said, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation” and then she awarded Gary the quilt.
After, Gary asked that everyone join him in a prayer and then, they sang “God Bless America.”
The other quilt recipient was Robbie Fairchild-Sutton, a veteran of the Vietnam era. In 1958, she joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) when she was just 18. On August 16, ALA Unit 376 representatives came to visit Robbie at Preston Manor to award her with a Quilt of Valor.
Unit 376 past-president Louise Spicer read the personalized quilt’s patch to Robbie, “We thank you for your unselfish service, patriotism, valor and great sacrifice for each of us in this country. We hope this quilt will help you to know that our appreciation and heartfelt best wishes are with you.”
As a wonderful surprise, the Director of Chenango County Veterans Services, Joseph W. Coe, was there and presented Robbie, along with two other Preston Manor resident veterans, James Davis and Jim Pinter, official Certificates of Appreciation to honor their military service!
These very unique quilts were handmade and delivered to Oxford by Unit 376 member, Bernice Hovencamp of Bloomfield, CT. Bernice belongs to the Sew Thankful Quilters of Avon Congregational Church of Avon, CT, and they make Quilts of Valor.
