PORT BYRON – After suffering two hard losses to kick off the 2024 season, the Sherburne-Earlville Timberwolves football team went in to the league opener against Port Byron with all their energy, heart, and physicality. S-E picked up their first win of the season with a big 30-0 shutout.
“We prepared, worked hard , and cleaned up some mistakes,” S-E head coach Steve Franklin said. “We made progress, but still working on cleaning up those mistakes, had two turnovers, but we’re happy to get the win and know we have things to do to only do better to get to our goals.”
S-E got on the board early on with a safety, which was set up by a high snap by the offense, which S-E’s Charlie Portzeba picked up on and tackled the quarterback in the end zone. Preston Proskine was also credited with a safety. From there, Franklin’s squad was pumped up and motivated, especially after Hadden Price’s touchdown to Nick Hull.
Hull received the ball four times for 56 yards and also had nine carries for 94 yards rushing.
Price also ran for a touchdown and handed the ball off to Landon Andrade for another score. Andrade also scored a fumble recovery touchdown on the defensive end. The S-E defense recovered two fumbles and two interceptions, thanks to Andrade, Cameron Mason, Proskine, and Jordan Palmer.
Price finished 11-for 14 for 112 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
S-E (1-2) heads to Cortland for a Thursday night match-up.
“If we continue to be physical, we can play with anybody,” Franklin said. “ If we bring that energy, heart, and physical nature, we will be successful.”
