GREENE – It was a special night for the Greene Trojans field hockey team as they hosted Afton/Harpursville for the annual Nancy Barrows/Nancy Bromley honorary game. Greene held on to a 2-1 victory with Afton/Harpursville threatening late in the fourth quarter.
Greene took a 1-0 lead into halftime with a goal by Josie Dutcher off a pass from Claire Flanagan halfway through the first quarter.
The Greene Field Hockey program honored and recognized both Nancy Barrows and Nancy Bromley at halftime. The late Nancy Barrows, who was called “B”, led the 1997 Greene field hockey team to a state title and also coached the volleyball and softball teams while being a physical education teacher. On the softball team, she earned 400 wins.
But, it was Nancy Bromley, who started Greene’s first field hockey team in 1972. She coached the team from 1972 to 1996, finishing with three state titles and a record of 325-52-20. She was inducted into the Section IV hall of fame in 1997. Greene is thankful to have so many female leaders among its coaches and other supporting staff.
Greene added on to its 1-0 lead with another goal by Dutcher with five seconds left of the third quarter with an assist from Ahraya Whitt.
Afton/Harpursville started out with good possession in the second half, where they picked up multiple penalty corners. Greene called a timeout with seven minutes left in the third quarter, which helped them build intensity and score what was the game-winning goal.
Dutcher nearly had a hat trick to start the fourth quarter with a big move down the line, but was stopped.
Afton/Harpursville got on the board with a goal by Abby Hoyt off a pass from McKenna Schultz within two minutes of the start of the fourth quarter. The Crimson Knights continued to battle, but Mya Leggett-Carlin stood her ground in net, where she made three saves.
Greene’s Braelyn Blakeslee made one save as Afton/Harpursville’s Emilie Hopkins made five saves in the loss.
