Newfield spoils Greene’s home opener

GREENE – Some of the execution errors that plagued Greene’s football team in last week’s road loss leaked into its home-opener Thursday night.
A bad punt snap led to an early Newfield score, and sundry other miscues conspired against a consistent rhythm on offense as Newfield handed Greene its second straight loss, 30-20, in Section IV 8-man football action.
While more of the execution foibles fell on special teams play a week ago, all three phases – offense, defense, and special teams – had issues, said Greene coach Dave Gorton.
“Defensively, we tackled very poorly,” Gorton said. “We had people not filling assignments and trying to do things individually instead of as a team. We didn’t really get anything from our defense that we expected.”
While total yardage was not available at press time, Newfield running back, Malcolm Jenkins easily eclipsed the 100-yard rushing barrier.
Jenkins had a TD in the first half and added a long TD score midway through the fourth quarter that extended Newfield’s lead to 22-12.
With less than two minutes to play, Jenkins had another long run that set up teammate Warrior-Malachi Miner’s one-yard TD run.
“(Jenkins) is a tough kid that finished runs,” Gorton said. “He never went down after the first guy contacted him.”
Greene was forced to punt after gaining possession to start the game. Newfield, also with the Trojans moniker, set up shop on Greene’s side of the field following the special teams miscue.
Greene looked poised to get a stop to end the Newfield threat, but the visitors converted a fourth-and-long pass to score the opening points.
The Trojans regrouped quickly after halftime, when Keegan Waltz returned the second half opening kickoff for the score to pare the deficit to 16-6.
A botched snap on the two-point conversion led to an unsuccessful try.
Newfield, which gave up a big lead last week, appeared on a path to do it again.
Following the Greene score, the visiting Trojans fumbled the ball inside their own five-yard line.
The Trojans’ Isaiah Sexton was credited with the fumble recovery, and that turnover paid dividends quickly.
Greene quarterback Micheal Slater punched it in from two yards out. Unfortunately, the recurring bad snaps thwarted the two-point conversion leaving Greene down 16-12.
The host team had two possessions in the third and fourth quarters with an opportunity to take the lead. Following the second failed drive, Jenkins raced 59 yards for the decisive points.
Waltz capped Greene’s scoring with a long TD run with under a minute to play.
“We have to be more disciplined and carry out our assignments defensively,” Gorton said. “Offensively, we just need to execute better.”
