NORWICH ― Saturday in the Park with Chobani continues this Saturday, October 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Norwich's West Park.
The weekly market showcases a wide variety of products grown and produced in Chenango County, from locally-brewed coffee to scented candles, clothing, flowers, produce, baked goods, pet accessories, artworks, and much more.
Saturday in the Park provides an opportunity for area residents to support local vendors, learn about local organizations, and gather as a community.
Pires Flower Basket Owner Rick Pires said they've been involved in Saturday in the Park since its inception, and said it's a great opportunity to see the community and spread the word about their products and services.
"Chobani is a great sponsor for the organization. We do very well down there. We’re always happy to be there," he said. "I believe that the community looks forward to us being there, and we have a lot of repeat customers from year to year and from week to week."
The Pires booth at Saturday in the Park stocks a mix of fresh-cut flowers, potted mums, pumpkins, gourds, and fresh produce, such as apples, squash, cauliflower, broccoli, and potatoes.
The produce is sourced from several local farms and harvested just before the weekly markets, to ensure they're as fresh as possible.
Pires also takes the time to decorate their booth in a different way each week, to make it more fun for customers to visit and shop.
"We try to put on a display for the customers that shop there. We try to make it a little different every week as far as decorating the booth. Like last week we had a big bundle of cornstalks in the center, and we have a stuffed scarecrow that we bring down to the park periodically," said Pires. "Sometimes we’ll decorate with hay bales and pumpkins and mums. We try to make it a fun family event."
Saturday in the Park also serves as an opportunity for Pires to let customers know about the Pires Farmers Market, located at 6066 State Highway 12 in Norwich, which also provides local produce, baked goods, honey, jelly, soup, and cheese.
"We encourage the customers to go up to the main store if we’re running low on something or they want something during the middle of the week," said Pires. "If we run out, you can go up to the main store and we have it every day."
The Pires Farmers Market is open from April through November 10 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
New to Saturday in the Park with Chobani is the Parker Walsh Team of Keller Williams Realty, who have joined the downtown festivities for the first time this year.
Owner Gretchen Walsh said she and her husband Kevin Walsh, Co-Owner of the Parker Walsh Team, bring real estate information to share with community members. She said it's a great way to make their business more visible and let people know they're there for any real estate needs.
Although they have real estate information available at their booth, Walsh said their main reason for setting up in the park each week is to connect with the community.
"For us it’s being there to interact really with the community," said Walsh. "We don’t like to call ourselves 'empty nesters,' we like to call ourselves 'bird launchers.' So now that we’ve launched our birds, so to speak, it gives us an opportunity to be interactive with the community again in a different way, not just through sports and school activities."
The team brings a popcorn machine each week to make and hand out popcorn to visitors, as a way to interact with and give back to the community.
"We've enjoyed serving popcorn. We have a popcorn machine, and I never knew popcorn was so popular. So that’s been a lot of fun just for us to talk to people, offer some popcorn, interact with families," she continued. "Our community has been so good to us that we want to give back in any way we can."
Walsh said the community is one of the many reasons to live in Chenango County, and the local support is evident not just at Saturday in the Park, but year-round.
"I feel really blessed to be part of the community, Norwich and the surrounding area. I’ve never taken for granted the community that we have," said Walsh. "If we have something happen in the community, we’re all there to support that person or people that might be going through something, and we’re there to celebrate people’s successes as well ... That’s one of the many reasons why I love it here."
Saturday in the Park with Chobani is organized by the BID and sponsored by Chobani. The weekly market continues on Saturday, October 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will conclude on Saturday, October 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the fourth annual Norwitch Fall Festival.
Other vendors at Saturday in the Park include Walling's Maple Syrup, Fox Trail Farm, Awestruck Ciders, Knuckle Down Coffee, Red Barn Alpacas, Ashby Ann, G&G Soy Candles, Gilligan's Restaurant, Maple Fox Handcrafted Woodworks, Twisted Tree Designs and All Natural Products, Palm and Sand, Upstate Flower Co., Fort Rig Microgreens, Lake Ridge Farm and Market, Donna's Classy Glass, and many more.
"We appreciate customers shopping local and coming out to Saturday in the Park," said Pires.
