NORWICH — The Guernsey Memorial Library, located at 3 Court Street in Norwich, will be hosting a Craft Swap this month, where crafters can turn in unwanted craft supplies and pick up new ones.
"Basically it’s because we all have little piles of crafty objects at home that we’ve got leftover from projects, or we bought it and we decided not to do it, and it’s too good to throw away and we don’t know what to do with it," explained Guernsey Library Director Connie Dalrymple.
She said individuals can turn in any items that can be used to craft, such as art supplies, yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks, stamps, fabric, and much more, so long as the supplies are clean and in usable condition.
Supplies can be turned in at the library's front desk from November 17 to 29 during the library's normal operating hours. Individuals who turn in supplies will be given a ticket that gives them access to the Craft Swap event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 30 in the Community Room.
Dalrymple suggests bringing a shopping bag or two, as individuals can take as many craft supplies as they'd like.
"The way we’ve done it in the past is we had actually counted up items that people have brought in and then gave them the same number of tickets for the items that they brought in. But we found that that was cumbersome, and plus people were far more interested in getting rid of stuff than they were picking up other stuff," Dalrymple said. "So we figured you bring something in, you can take as much as you want. We want to get rid of it, we want to redistribute the wealth."
Anything that isn't taken during the Craft Swap will be available for free at the library for a few days afterward. Anything left over after that will be donated to the Salvation Army.
Dalrymple said this is a great time of year to not only declutter a stock of craft supplies, but also to pick up any supplies needed for holiday gifts.
"People want to make things for the holidays for gifts and stuff," she said. "This is a good time of the year to do it."
In addition to the Craft Swap, Guernsey Library will also be hosting a Silent Surplus Auction from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 16.
"As part of the construction project we swapped out a lot of our old furniture for new furniture, and so we’ve got some older things that we want to get rid of," said Dalrymple.
Participants in the auction will receive slips of paper to place their bids on a variety of used furniture. Dalrymple said winners will be notified on Monday, November 18, and will be able to pick up their items at the library from November 18 to 24.
