NORWICH — Chenango County teens are invited to celebrate "Friendsgiving" from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 18 at The Place, located at 22 East Main Street in Norwich.
Attendees can enjoy Thanksgiving food, play a "stuff the turkey" game and trivia, and create a recipe book together.
"I’m encouraging everyone to bring a family recipe or just Google something that you like online so then we can make our own recipe book," explained The Place Teen Program Coordinator Elizabeth Hathaway
Those who would like to attend Friendsgiving can call The Place at 607-336-9696 to let them know they'll be attending.
Friendsgiving is also serving as a way for teens in The Place's after-school program – now known as EPIC, which stands for "Empower, Prepare, Inspire, and Connect teens in our area" – to learn valuable life skills including menu planning and reading and following a recipe.
"We are just working on life skills, different things that they should know that, as adults, they don’t always know," explained Hathaway.
"For the Friendsgiving we’re going to be working on menu planning," she continued. "Then we're going to work on learning to read and follow a recipe, because we're going to be cooking the food for Friendsgiving."
The Place Executive Director Sharon Vesely said they've been working on restructuring their teen program. In addition to the new name, she said their hope is to have a teen center at The Place with later hours, as well as expanding the program to Bainbridge.
"We’re really working toward revamping because the needs of our community have changed for teens a little bit," said Vesely. "We’re really looking at moving back to a teen center, but the hours for that would be after 6 o’clock in the evening."
"We’re excited because we are really working hard on the possibility of expanding our teen program and teen center and bridging out to Bainbridge. So that’s in the works as well," she added. "Just really moving back to that because that’s the need for our community. It is exciting."
Teens who would like to join the EPIC program can find registration packets online at ThePlaceNorwich.com or at The Place.
