Chenango County grapples with power outages from winter storm

CHENANGO COUNTY– Thousands of Chenango County residents were without power Friday morning as a significant winter storm brought heavy wet snow, strong winds, and widespread disruptions.
NYSEG reports that as of 8:50 a.m. on Friday that 5,759 customers are without power in Chenango County. Areas most impacted include Coventry, Plymouth, and Greene , with widespread outages also reported in the City of Norwich. Efforts to restore power are ongoing, but downed tree limbs and icy conditions have slowed progress.
A Winter Storm Warning was issued by the National Weather Service on Thursday. The storm brought rain that transitioned to heavy, wet snow with several inches of accumulations in Norwich, while higher-elevation and areas to the south saw more.
Wet, heavy snow has caused tree limbs to snap and power lines to fall. Roads remain hazardous Friday morning, with slippery conditions. Almost all the schools in the area closed.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise caution if driving is essential. Officials recommend taking breaks while shoveling heavy snow to avoid overexertion and preparing for potential extended outages by ensuring emergency supplies, such as flashlights and batteries, are readily available.
