NORWICH — The Emmanuel Episcopal Church, also known as “The Soul Kitchen,” located at 37 West Main Street in Norwich, provided their annual free Thanksgiving dinner and this year served up 935 meals.
John Klockowski, who runs the dinner along with Gary Brookins, said it was a fast-paced, exciting day.
“Our volunteers were awesome, given the adverse weather conditions at the start of the day,” said Klockowski. “We ended up serving 935 meals.”
“We were completely cleaned out with the dinners,” he said. “About 560 dinners went out for delivery, about 250 dinners were pick-up and the remaining dinners were served in house.
“There were some families, singles, and couples, a nice cross-section of people that came in to visit with us,” Klockowski said.
He said there were challenges as he and his son worked side by side, cooking up potatoes and stuffing.
“We had to have boiling pots of water on the stove at all times ready for the next wave of mashed potatoes or stuffing,” said Klockowski.
“It was pretty frantic at times, but all in all went smoothly,” he added.
Thinking ahead to next year, John said he will probably add one or two more people to the kitchen staff just to give people breaks to fill in spots when he and his son Jake are constantly at the stove and re-supplying turkey trays and various items.
Klockowski thanked his fantastic staff of volunteers, Brookins, who he said is always awesome, and Father Steve, who is very supportive.
