NORWICH — The Norwich Theater Company, Inc. (NTCI) is spreading holiday cheer with a free Christmas concert at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 20 in the Martin W. Kappel Theater at the Chenango Arts Council, located at 27 West Main Street in Norwich.
"The program will consist of Christmas songs, old and new. Most of the songs will be familiar to many," said NTCI President Marty Kuhn.
The concert is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served after the show.
NTCI is also welcoming anyone who would like to perform. Kuhn said individuals do not need to audition to be a part of the show. Individuals who would like to participate can contact her at marty@norwichtheatercompany.org to sign up.
The show will feature a variety of Christmas songs, and possibly some dancing. However, Kuhn said there won't be sets or elaborate dance numbers like you might find in a musical. Instead, the main focus is on having fun and celebrating the holidays.
"It is an informal concert. There will be some group songs, some solos, duets, small groups. There may be some light dance, but no sets or anything like that. What we will have the most of is fun!" said Kuhn.
Rehearsals began on Wednesday, December 11, but Kuhn said singers can still jump in for the remaining three nights of practice, which will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18 and Thursday, December 19 at the Chenango Arts Council.
"We would like everyone to attend all of the rehearsals, but understand if they have to miss one," said Kuhn.
She said they will also be available to meet with participants outside of the scheduled rehearsal times, if they need assistance with the songs.
This is NTCI's second year hosting a Christmas concert. Kuhn said the first was held last year, after their production of "Scrooge: The Musical" had to be postponed.
The Norwich Theater Company's performance season consists of a holiday-themed show in the winter, a non-musical play around March, and a musical in July. They also host the "Toast to Broadway" fundraiser each June at the Colonia Theater in Norwich.
Their 2024-25 performance season kicked off last weekend with their production of "Scrooge: The Musical," and will continue with "Terms of Endearment" in March and "Nunsense: The Mega Musical" in July.
