Afton boys pick up first win of season; defeat UV

AFTON – The Afton Crimson Knights boys basketball team secured their first win of the season in a hard-fought MAC league match-up against the Unadilla Valley Storm on Wednesday night, edging out a 51-49 victory.

The game came down to the wire with Afton’s Ryan Wright making two foul shots with seven seconds left, which ended up being the game-winner as UV’s shot at the buzzer was no good.

“Great team win. We needed those six to nine points from everyone,” Afton head coach Richard Winans said.

Wright led the Crimson Knights with 18 points, including nine points in the final eight minutes, where he made five of six free-throws. Toni Obeada and Pierce Bushaw both added nine points with Marcus Chavis and Dion Bushaw contributing with six points apiece.

UV’s Haywood Edwards dished out 15 points as the Storm started out strong in the first half, but Afton pulled away in the third quarter, so the Storm had to put up a fight in the fourth quarter, just falling short within those final seconds. Denzel Peter scored eight points as Preston York and Declan Potter both finished with seven points and Braden Golliver with six points.
