NORWICH — The ice skating rinks on Borden Avenue and in East Park in Norwich are anticipated to open to the public this week.
City of Norwich Youth Bureau Director Anthony Testani said the City of Norwich Department of Public Works (DPW) began putting water on the rinks last week, and they hope to have enough solid ice by the middle of this week for locals to skate.
"Hopefully over the next couple days it freezes nice and solid and we’ll be able to open it up mid-week [this] week," he said.
The skating rink at the Robert Mason Recreation Center on Borden Avenue will be open for use when Weiler Park is open, which is from dawn to 10 p.m. each day.
Additionally, free ice skate rentals will be available in the Recreation Center building from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sundays.
Testani said the rink in East Park should already be ready to skate on. The East Park rink is also free to use, and is open to the public from dawn to dusk each day.
"That’s up right now," he said. "Hopefully it freezes nice and solid by the next couple days, and they should be on that by Sunday or Monday, hopefully."
The ice skating rink in East Park is not staffed, and individuals will need to bring their own ice skates.
The additional rink in downtown Norwich is a new addition for the city. It was purchased last winter using Youth Bureau funds collected through fundraising efforts.
The past few years have been difficult to form ice on the rinks due to milder winter weather. However, Testani said they're hopeful this year's chillier temperatures will give area residents time to skate.
"We haven’t been able to make ice over there. The pickleball courts I think help it, because I was over there last week when it was nice and cold and the ice was thick from what water was on there. We didn’t have a full layer of ice yet, but there was some ice on it," Testani said. "That all melted, obviously, the last week with the temperatures. So hopefully it freezes again and it gets nice and solid for folks to use."
