Oxford girls begin new year with big win over GMU
OXFORD – Coming off tournament play over Winter break, the Oxford Blackhawks girls basketball team hosted non-league but local opponent GMU. The last time these two teams met was in the first round of the Class D sectionals game in 2023. On Monday night, Oxford came away with a big 50-16 win over the Lady Raiders.
Oxford had a fast start with 22 points in the first quarter and held GMU scoreless before settling in with a comfortable lead. Both teams slowed to start the second half, but Oxford finished strong to close out the contest, picking up their seventh win of the season.
Paige Rickard continues to shine for the Blackhawks as she scored a team-high 13 points. Aubrey Rickard followed with 10 points as Abby Denz added seven points off the bench. Jenna Denz had six points while Emmalee Reiss finished with five points. Taegan Manwarren added three points in the first quarter as Margaret Rovente, Christine Seiler, and Olivia Oliver all scored two points.
Alyssa Sorochinsky led GMU with 10 points as Kaden O’Hara chipped in four and Avriel Correll added two points in the loss.
After four straight non-league games, Oxford (7-3) dives deep into the MAC league matchups. They host UV on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.
