CORTLAND – The Norwich YMCA Dolphins swim team competed at the Snowman Classic Invitational on Jan. 19, held at SUNY Cortland.
Team highlights included just over 116 seconds worth of collective time drops with most all 31 swimmers dropping time in at least 1 or more of their respective events.
The Dolphins also added two more members to the state team with Gideon Mathews (8 & under Boys) making state qualifying times in the 100 free and 25 breaststroke, along with Kaelyn Conant (13-14 Girls) making state qualifying time in the 100 Breaststroke.
“We’ve been putting in a lot of hard work after the holiday break and it’s paying off. In competitive swimming, we look for time drops as indicators of improvement, and this comes at the right time of the season as we head into our championship meets.”
Additional highlights include several record swims by the Dolphins whereby new team records were either established or broken. Kris Deuel set the 15-18 Boys 1650 Free record with a time of 20:10.84; Kaelyn Conant set the 13-14 200 Breaststroke record with 3:17.91; Aiden Diefenbacher set the 11-12 Boys 500 Free record with a 8:17.87; Reigan Aikins set the 9-10 Girls 500 Free record with a 7:43.27 as well as the 9-10 Girls 100 Butterfly record at 1:42.81. Nora Diefenbacher broke the 9-10 100 Backstroke record with a 1:23.67.
“Many of our swimmers look forward to these types of Invitational meets where they have the opportunity to swim special events. They want the challenge and we help them gently train for it. They have fun with it and it sets a really good example for our future generation of swimmers. These new records not only give our swimmers a sense of confidence but also act as motivators that help future swimmers set goals and work towards those goals.
The Dolphins now move on to the District Championship meet on Feb 1 & 2 then, for those who have qualified, train for the State Championship meet scheduled for March 21-23.
