NY DMV urges residents to prepare for REAL ID deadline
ALBANY - The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is encouraging New Yorkers to act now to ensure they are prepared for the upcoming federal REAL ID Act enforcement deadline. Beginning May 7, 2025, anyone traveling domestically by air or entering secure federal facilities will be required to present a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, or a valid passport.
DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder advised New Yorkers not to wait until the last minute. “We do not yet know how the REAL ID Act will be enforced on May 7, so the best way to ensure smooth travel and avoid delays is to get to the DMV and upgrade your ID right away,” said Schroeder.
The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed last week that enforcement will begin on May 7, 2025. Federal agencies may adopt a phased enforcement approach for up to two years, but full enforcement must be in place by May 2027.
How to Get a REAL ID To obtain a REAL ID or an Enhanced ID, New Yorkers must visit a DMV office in person. They must bring original documents proving their identity and have a new photo taken. While a REAL ID does not cost extra beyond the standard renewal fee, an Enhanced ID costs an additional $30 and can also be used as identification when re-entering the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries.
The DMV offers several online tools to simplify the process, including a document guide and an application pre-screening process. Customers are encouraged to make a reservation at their local DMV office to avoid delays.
