NORWICH — The Chenango Arts Council, located at 27 West Main Street in Norwich, is promoting the arts of all kinds in the coming months with workshops, events, and opportunities for teaching artists.
The upcoming events kick off with the "Get Cary-ed Away" double-feature event, which will include a screening of two Cary Grant films in the Martin W. Kappel Theater beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12.
The evening will begin with a showing of "His Girl Friday," a fast-paced comedy from 1940 starring Cary Grant and Rosilind Russell. The film follows a newspaper editor desperately trying to win back his reporter ex-wife by enticing her with an interview with a death-row convict.
After a brief intermission, guest can enjoy a screening of "Charade," a 1963 mystery film starring Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, and Walter Matthau. This twisting tale in Paris, France involves a mysterious murder, a stolen fortune, and a swarm of goons vying for the pilfered riches.
The films are free to attend, but the Arts Council will be accepting free-will donations from those who would like to give. Beverages, light snacks, and popcorn will be provided for free as well.
On Thursday, February 20, the Arts Council will be hosting a keyhole scarf crochet workshop beginning at 6 p.m. in the Arts Council's classroom.
A keyhole scarf is a unique garment that features a hole in one end, so the other end of the scarf can be pulled through.
The class is led by local crafter Pat Horton, who has taught crochet classes at the Chenango Arts Council and Guernsey Memorial Library in the past.
"It’s led by Pat Horton, she’s taught a few crochet classes with us before, and people have a good time," said Chenango Arts Council Administrative Assistant Mary Beth Miller.
All supplies will be provided. Registration is $12 for Arts Council members and $15 for non-members. To sign up, visit ChenangoArts.org.
In March, the Arts Council will be providing a month-long Poetry Writing for Self Expression series led by Tina Abraham.
"It is a four-week course that provides tools and exercises to cultivate self expression, mindfulness, and creativity," said Miller. "[It] involves some writing tips, and some tips on reading to inform your writing, and things like that. It’s about authenticity and self expression and creativity."
Classes will be held each Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., beginning on March 6. The series is $40 for members and $45 for non-members, which includes all four classes and all supplies needed.
To register for the series, visit ChenangoArts.org.
Miller said the Arts Council is always looking for new workshops to bring to the community, and are accepting proposals from artists interested in leading a class or series.
"We’ve got some good responses that we’re excited about, and we’re reaching out to people to schedule things, but we are always looking to be able to offer people different kinds of art workshops and create different kinds of opportunities for teaching artists," she said.
Prospective workshops can be in any artistic medium, from drawing or painting to ceramics, pottery, sculpture, writing, photography, and more.
Those interested in teaching a class at the Chenango Arts Council can send their credentials or resume, lesson proposal, desired fees, and photos of their work, if possible, to info@chenangoarts.org.
Chenango Arts Council's programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
