Greene girls drop to Delhi in Class C quarterfinals

GREENE – After earning a first round bye as the second seed in the Section IV, Class C tournament, the Greene Trojans girls’ basketball team hosted Delhi in a rematch from the MAC semi-finals at Greene High School. Greene, who had lost to Sidney in the MAC Championship, suffered a hard season-ending loss to the Bulldogs 36-33.
It was a full crowd at Greene High School with a mixture of Greene and Delhi students and parents, including the Delhi boys’, who won their third straight MAC title and defeated Union Springs in the quarterfinals.
Both girls’ teams came out strong in the first quarter with Greene starting off hot with a 7-0 run, including a three from Claire Flanagan. However, Delhi had success stealing loose balls and driving quickly down the court, showing strength with the long ball as well and then the game was tied at 7.
Delhi took the lead from the free throw line and Cali Knapp answered back with a three in under 20 seconds.
Both teams continued to battle it out before the break, where Greene took a one-point 20-19 lead at halftime. Greene held a one-point 29-28 lead at the end of the third quarter as well with the game being decided in the final eight minutes.
