ALBANY - Assemblyman Joseph Angelino (R,C-Norwich) joined Executive Associate Director for Enforcement and Removal Operations Tom Homan, as well as his Assembly and Senate Republican colleagues, to call for the passage of Laken’s Law (A.2262), as well as the repeal of the Green Light Law (A.1528).
Laken’s Law, named after Laken Riley who was killed by an illegal alien, would require New York to notify United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when an illegal alien is arrested.
“The fact of the matter is that many cases like Laken’s could have been avoided. How many more senseless acts of violence have to occur before we make the common-sense changes to allow illegal immigrants who are arrested to be taken into ICE custody? New York’s sanctuary status needs to be revoked immediately to make New York safer for all,” said Angelino.
The Green Light Law allows illegal immigrants to apply for and obtain driver's licenses and prevents the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) from sharing applicants' information with federal immigration enforcement.
“How crazy is it that New York state won’t allow a police agency access to records of stolen cars and files on wanted felons. These are basic tools to keep law enforcement officers safe. The fact that we not only allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses but also refuse to allow ICE access to the records to help get criminal illegal immigrants off the street is the opposite of common sense. We need to repeal this disastrous policy,” concluded Angelino.
