Teacher charged with child endangerment and misconduct for alleged inappropriate relationship with student

NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of a teacher on Monday, following an investigation into alleged relationship with a student.

Richard M. Karl Jr., 54, of Johnson City, was arrested on April 14 on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and official misconduct, both Class A misdemeanors.

Sheriff’s detectives allege that during 2024 and 2025, Karl, a teacher, “subjected a student or students to contact that was damaging to the physical, mental, and moral welfare of a child.”

A warrant was issued following the investigation, and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Division located and arrested Karl on the morning of April 14. He was then turned over to Chenango County detectives, processed, and held for arraignment in court.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.
