East Guilford United Presbyterian Church to host Earth-themed services April 27 and June 1
EAST GUILFORD - The United Presbyterian Church in East Guilford has received an Earth Care Certification from PCUSA (Presbyterian Church USA) for the 14th year. It is just one of the 361 congregations in 41 states that chose to dedicate themselves to intentional care of God’s Earth this year.
The 2025 theme is “Our Power, Our Planet” for the Sunday, April 27, worship service at 10 a.m. at the East Guilford Church on NYS Route 8 north of Sidney. The service will a focus on renewable energy sources, such as solar power.
An additional Sunday for Earth Care will be on June 1 at the 10 a.m. service. Guest speaker Chris Burger will do a presentation on garbage and ways households might reduce their garbage output. This service will be followed by a dish-to-pass meal with a question-and-answer period.
One of the goals of the Earth Care program is to inspire churches to care for the Earth in a holistic way, through integrating Earth care into all aspects of their church life.
Over the past 14 years the East Guilford Church has focused on diverse areas, such as installing energy-efficient bulbs, weatherizing the building, installing programmable thermostats, holding worship service outdoors, sharing produce from members’ gardens, recycling household items with an annual rummage sale, planting trees, sponsoring solar power units for rural Ethiopia, and reducing paper usage.
The annual Earth Care Sunday worship services highlight varied avenues for the protection and care for our Earth with topics such as ‘going green,' buying local food, the value of trees, farming traditions, plastic awareness, and global warming.
