Greene softball hangs on against Norwich

GREENE – On Friday evening, the Greene Trojans softball team hosted non-league but local opponent Norwich. Both teams battled and competed defensively with Greene hanging on to win 13-8 with Norwich threatening late in the bottom of the seventh.

Norwich took an early 2-0 lead off back-to-back hits to start the game from Bri and Ava Cirigliano. Ava had an RBI triple to left field and then scored on a sac-fly by Kerragan Reid before Greene limited the damage with two fly outs, including two tough and tremendous catches from left fielder Mia Yahner.

The Trojans got one back in the bottom of the first after Ahraya Whitt, who went four-for-four in the previous game, led off the inning with a bunt for a single and came in to score on a passed ball.

Norwich extended its lead to 3-1 as Emma Baker, who reached on a hit by pitch, stole second off the Trojans defense, advanced to third on a passed ball and came in to score on a groundout RBI by Brooke Rogers.

Greene tied the game at three with an RBI triple by Mia Yahner to drive in a run before a fielder’s choice RBI by Brooke Relyea.

In a tied game, Greene held Norwich with good defense to catch runners stealing, twice in the third inning, which allowing the Trojans to step back up to the plate, where they scored four runs in the bottom of the third.
