NORWICH — Recently, the building formerly known as Stefanelli's/Grove Park Restaurant was razed, leaving a vacant lot and a few trees remaining at State Route 12.

On May 31, Buckley Excavating began the tear down and removal of the building. Due to asbestos throughout the interior of the building, the state required a specific date for the tear down.

Construction workers wore hazmat suits, masks, goggles and gloves to protect themselves from the hazardous material.

The owners reported purchasing the building in 2023 at public auction and had intentions to take it down as it was way past time and ready to collapse on its own.

Community members were quick to notice the orange fencing surrounding the building, indicating construction may soon take place. Local residents began posting their memories on social media in recent days.

Thoughts shared were of the restaurants great food, employment, wedding rehearsals, fun times, family get togethers and more.

Bud Sanders said he supported the tear down, saying it needed to be torn down for about 10 to 15 years but said it was a great place 30 years ago.

Linda Chase Hesse said it is so sad that another part of our history will be gone forever.
