CCE presented hands-on butter making skills to Oxford students

OXFORD — Recently, Oxford Academy and Central School District students learned how to make butter from cream in the last Ag in the Classroom activity for the year.


Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) 4-H Youth and Families Supervisor Kristi Gorrell visited Oxford classrooms, teaching the butter lesson to third and fourth grade students across six classes.


“The students were taught the old fashioned way to make butter by shaking heavy cream in small canning jars,” said Gorrell. “The students learned that first the cream thickens into whipped cream and then finally becomes butter.”


She said it becomes cream in about four minutes and turns to butter in about ten minutes.


“For many, this was a first time learning experience,” Gorrell said.
