Sex offender handed over to ICE after allegedly failing to comply with registration
NORWICH - A 31-year-old Town of Norwich resident was arrested June 9 by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly failing to report a change of address as required under New York State sex offender registration laws.
Abdi A. Ali, a level two convicted sex offender, was previously registered in the City of Syracuse. He is accused of moving to the Town of Norwich without notifying law enforcement within the required 10-day period.
According to authorities, Ali was taken into custody without incident and arraigned in centralized arraignment before being remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility.
Ali is charged with failure to notify law enforcement of an address change, a Class E felony.
He was released from county custody and then turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after the sheriff’s office was notified that Ali was a person of interest with their agency.
All charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
