Sheriff: Driver and vehicle sought in fatal Sherburne hit-and-run found

SHERBURNE – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal hit and run collision between a truck and a pedestrian that occurred in Sherburne on July 4.

“We did locate the vehicle, and the possible driver and we are continuing our investigation into the cause of the incident,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Jeffrey Barton Monday morning.

Investigators located the vehicle and its driver following a weekend search.

Barton confirmed the victim was a 59-year-old male resident of Sherburne.

He said more information about the case would be available later. The investigation is ongoing.

Police reported the incident occurred at around 8:45 p.m. on July 4 when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle that fled the scene, said Barton. The collision occurred on State Highway 80 near the Rogers Conservation Center.

Sheriff’s deputies launched an immediate investigation and issued a public request for information the following day.

In a statement on July 5, police shared an image and said they were searching for a black, newer-model Ram crew cab pickup truck, equipped with black rims and showing damage to the front passenger side.

On Sunday, July 6, investigators then released a surveillance image of a man identified as a person of interest.

On Monday, July 7, Lt. Jeffrey Barton confirmed deputies had located a vehicle matching the description, as well as the possible driver.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity but said more information would be shared at a later stage of the investigation.

No charges have been filed as of press time.
