SHERBURNE - A Norwich man was taken into custody Thursday after a coordinated effort by the Norwich and Sherburne police departments, according to a joint statement.
Derek L. Balcom, 42, of Norwich, faces multiple charges, including two Class D felonies: second-degree assault and third-degree grand larceny.
He also is charged with fifth-degree conspiracy, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration, and petit larceny, all misdemeanors.
Police allege Balcom stole a side-by-side UTV from UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital on July 2 at about 10:10 p.m., and on July 4 took vehicle keys from a local business before fleeing.
On July 17, detectives located Balcom in the Village of Sherburne. He allegedly resisted arrest and fought with officers, resulting in injuries to a Norwich detective.
"This individual has multiple convictions for fleeing from and fighting with police officers in Florida and I am happy to report he is now in the county jail," Norwich Police Chief Reuben J. Roach said. The injured detective is recovering and receiving medical treatment.
Balcom was arraigned in Chenango County central arraignment court and is remanded to jail without bail.
