NORWICH – The Norwich Common Council is proposing a pay bump for council members and the mayor, something the city hasn’t done in more than three decades.
The contingent raise calls for an increase to council members’ annual stipend, from the current $4,000 per year to $5,000 per year; and for the part-time city mayor position, from $16,210 to $20,000 per year.
The council has set back-to-back public hearings – one for the proposed pay increase for the council, and the other for the mayor – to be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, inside the council chambers.
A potential pay raise for elected city officials was discussed by the city council in June, and a public hearing was held during the council’s June meeting. The resolution, however, was ultimately tabled in order to create two separate resolutions that separated a pay increase for the mayor from a proposed increase for city aldermen.
