Most of the scholarships given by the Greater Norwich Foundation are named for a past benefactor. This is in recognition of their generosity to the Foundation and generally is not a condition of their gift.
In 2025 we introduced two new scholarships; the James I. Dunne Scholarship and the James M. and Mary I. Dunne Scholarship; both awarding a student a scholarship in the amount of $3,000 per year up to four years of college.
The James I. Dunne scholarship was established by the trustees in recognition of the over 39 years that James I. Dunne chaired the GNF Board of Trustees. His leadership and guidance during that time has helped enable many students to continue their education and many organizations to provide important services to the Norwich community.
The James McCune and Mary Ivory Dunne scholarship was established in memory of both James and Mary. James Dunne, who graduated from Oxford Academy, started working at what is now NBT Bank as the “mail boy.” Over the years, despite the lack of a college degree, he advanced through positions of increasing responsibility until, shortly before his death from cancer, he was elected a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank. Mary attended the Utica School of Commerce, and she was subsequently hired as the secretary for an executive at The Norwich Pharmacal Company. Both Mary and James were very involved in the community.
In total, over $110,000 in scholarships were awarded this year by the Greater Norwich Foundation. In addition to the above scholarships, the Greater Norwich Foundation provided a total of $450,000 to non-profit community organizations in the greater Norwich area during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025. A copy of the annual report is available in the office of NBT Bank.
