Updates from Albany: Enjoy a safe and fun summer in upstate New York

Summer is in full swing, and it will be over before you know it. There is still time to get out and do some exploring.

I wanted to remind folks about some great summer activities throughout our area and give some important safety tips to ensure you and your family have a fun, memorable and safe summer. Upstate New York as a whole, and our area in particular, have great outdoor activities to take part in, whether that be hiking or doing some water sports, particularly in our state parks. As a reminder, veterans and Gold Star families have free access to all New York state parks, and we’ve got some beauties nearby.

One of those parks, and my favorite, is Bowman Lake State Park. This beautiful retreat just west of Norwich is often called a “camper's paradise,” where one can have picnics on the lakefront, go bird watching, kayak and fish. The Finger Lakes Trail passes through this park as it winds across the state. Bowman Lake Park has close to 1,000 acres of wilderness, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. If you don’t want to pitch a tent, I recommend exploring the rustic cabins that are available. I’ve used the cabin in the past and later learned some have electricity. You won’t regret visiting.

Another great location I love to visit is Chenango Valley State Park. One of the most amazing things about this park is that its two lakes were created from glaciers that left behind buried ice, which then melted and formed the lakes. Along with the ability to swim, birdwatch, fish and camp in one of more than 180 campsites and more than 20 cabins, there is also a full golf course in the park for anyone interested.

Finally, I want to mention Oquaga Creek State Park, which straddles Broome, Delaware and Chenango counties. This is a great place to unwind and reconnect with nature in peace and quiet, as there is no cellphone service or Wi-Fi. This spot is great for anglers who can catch a variety of fish, and there are miles of trails through rolling hills you can explore. Along with 90 camp sites, this park also offers a two-story, full-service cabin with a fully equipped kitchen.

There are many more amazing places to visit: county parks, town parks and state land in just about every township, but I just wanted to point out a few of my personal favorites. Now with the fun part over, I want to talk about the important topic of safety while exploring the outdoors. No one wants their fun summer outing to turn into an emergency, so to help mitigate that, here are some helpful tips.

When on the water, always wear some sort of floatation device, even if you are a strong swimmer; this can make all the difference if something unexpected happens. Always check the weather before you head out and dress for the occasion. No one wants to be stuck on a kayak or canoe with no protection during a torrential downpour. Never operate a watercraft while under the influence. Far too often, we hear stories of tragic, fatal accidents because someone was boating while drinking.

I spend a lot of time on the trails as a maintainer on the Finger Lakes Trail, and I have some suggestions that I think will help. When hiking, always make sure you tell someone where you are going, so if you become lost, they can call for help. Make sure the trail you are hiking is suitable for your skill level, and wear good footwear. It’s always good to pack some snacks and water to keep you going. Another “must-have” when hiking is a whistle, just in case. And last but not least, have fun! There is nothing better than getting into the great outdoors and exploring the beauty of upstate New York.

I sincerely hope you and your loved ones have an amazing summer and make memories to last a lifetime, and I hope to see you out and about. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact my office, and we will work to assist you.
