Otselic Valley Fishing and Heritage Association Reading Series to begin August 23

SOUTH OTSELIC - The Otselic Valley Fishing and Heritage Association (OVF&HA) invites the community to their three part reading series: “Liberty Has a Country,” sponsored by the Follett Foundation.
OVF&HA Chair Michael Foor-Pessin said the series will be an embracive view of the American Revolutionary War and includes presentations, a field trip and book discussions.
“This summer and fall, we will be studying three books that offer a comprehensive view of the American Revolutionary War,” said Foor-Pessin said, adding, “Forgotten Allies: The Oneida Indians and the American Revolution, Memoir of a Revolutionary Soldier: The Narrative of Joseph Plumb Martin, and The Frozen Rover.”
The first session will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., August 23rd, at the Methodist Church located at 102 Clarence Church Road, South Otselic.
Foor-Pessin said the speaker will be veteran, author, educator, and historian William Kidder. He will present his most recently published book, “Defending Fort Stanwix: A Multicultural Frontier Story of the American Revolution”.
The second session will be a trip to the Shako:wi Cultural Center. Participants will meet at the Center at 9:30 a.m., October 4, located at 5 Territory Road, Oneida, NY.
He said after the tour, additional travels east will include stops at a few important historic sites in the Upper Mohawk Valley, then an afternoon lunch break to conclude the session.
The third session will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., October 11, at the Loomis Barn, on the campus of the Chenango County Historical Society Museum, located at 45 Rexford Street in Norwich.
Foor-Pessin noted folks from the Oneida Indian Nation and the Shako:wi Cultural Center will join the reading series to discuss the critical role the Oneida Nation played as America’s First Allies.
“After their presentation, we will discuss the three books and share ideas about how the American Revolutionary War is relevant to our present day,” said Foor-Pessin.

At the first session, if any books are remaining, they will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.
The reading series is offered by OVF &HA, in collaboration with The Chenango County Historical Society Museum, The Chenango County Chapter of the New York State Archaeological Association, and CS Miller Books.
