NORWICH – On Saturday, the 2nd annual Commerce Chenango Pickleball Showdown was held at the Borden Avenue Skating Facility on the new beautiful pickleball nets as well as the tennis courts at Weiler Park. Women played from 9 a.m. to noon, mixed doubles from noon to 3 p.m. and ending with the men from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. There was also live entertainment from Empire sound as well as a bounce house for kids and food from Kandi’s Kitchen and Cruz’s Mexican Food as well as Gilligan’s Ice cream on site.
All registered players received a bag and a shirt from Commerce Chenango. Teams played up to four games and the top two teams per court played each other following the regular scheduled games.
There were even teams going all out for the tournament by wearing designed and matching shirts like “Dinkerbell”, “Big Dill Energy”, and even “Rebel Rowe’s.”
The tournament also saw different age groups playing against each other, young and old, but at the same skill levels.
“Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America,” Sal Testani, Commerce Chenango President said. “ I had no doubts we would get players, especially high school students, even though we did not get any college students. The advanced players were extremely talented and the beginners were out there having fun. I’m happy the way it turned out.”
