Thefts from unlocked vehicles reported in West Oneonta area
ONEONTA - New York State Police are urging residents to take a simple but critical precaution to prevent vehicle related thefts.
Troopers have responded to reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles, making them easy targets for criminals. Most recently, incidents occurred in the West Oneonta area sometime between the hours of 9:00 p.m. on October 9 to 7:30 a.m. on October 10. Vehicles were rummaged through, a wallet was reported stolen and spare change was taken.
Many of these crimes are a crime of opportunity, thieves are pulling on door handles until they find one that’s unlocked.
Some tips for community members:
Always lock your car, even when parked in your driveway or garage
Never leave valuables in plain sight – if you must leave them in the car, store them in the truck but the best practice is to take your valuables with you
Do not leave keys or key fobs in your vehicle
Park in well-lit areas whenever possible
Install cameras or flood lights at your residence
Report any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1
Please take a few extra seconds to make sure your vehicles are locked and check on your elderly neighbors who may not be as aware of these crimes.
