NEW BERLIN — The Unadilla Valley Storm boys’ basketball team opened its 2025-26 season on Monday night at home against non-league opponent Morris. Following UV JV’s win, the Varsity boys took the court, but could not contest well with a quick Morris team, falling 67-42.
Morris had the speed, success on converting off turnovers, and success at the free-throw line. The Mustangs made 13 of 17 free-throw shots in the first half alone, finishing16-for-24 on the night. UV was in early foul trouble with multiple players having two fouls or more at the break.
The Storm saw good opportunities from Braden Golliver, Preston York, and Tristan Collins at the start, including Collins making a basket at the end of the first quarter buzzer. Zack Welch also got involved in good rebounding.
Taylor Hodge, Denzel Peter, and Declan Potter got in the midst in the second quarter, but UV found themselves down 37-19 at halftime. Morris’ Ryan Murphy had 20 points alone after 16 minutes of play and could not be stopped.
Holding a comfortable lead, Morris tried for the long ball in the second half, which allowed UV to force turnovers and pick up some defensive rebounds. Braden Golliver blocked a few times defensively, but Morris still found ways around the Storm defense.
UV saw themselves picking up opportunities at the free-throw line, but could not find success, only making 8-of-21 attempts. Collins, who was the team’s leading scorer with eight points, went three-of-four from the line as Welch made both shots he received in the first quarter.
Seth Meagley, Brodey Cattanach, Kaleb Smith, and Steven Johnson saw opportunity late in the stretch. Collins and Johnson also put up three’s with Johnson making a three at the buzzer to end the game.
Aside from Collins, Braden Golliver finished with seven points, Denzel Peter had six points, and Johnson with five points. Declan Potter and Preston York both had four points each as Welch, Cattanach, Hodge, and Meagley all chipped in two points.
UV (0-1) was scheduled to play Edmeston at home tonight at 7 p.m. but with the snow day and winter storm, the game may be rescheduled to a later date. Check Schedule Galaxy for more details.
