Norwich JV and Varsity girls and boys win the UV Holiday Tournament

NEW BERLIN— After first round action on Saturday, the Unadilla Valley Holiday tournament resumed on Monday with consolation and championship rounds. Congratulations to the Norwich Purple Tornado JV and Varsity girls and boys on winning the tournament. Great job to the Greene Trojans girls on picking up their first win of the season against UV in the consolation game.

Varsity Girls’ Consolation:

Greene 52- UV 24

Greene’s Hailey Butler went off with 21 points, including 11 points in the third quarter to give the Trojans a big lead. Ahraya Whitt banked in two three’s and finished with nine points off the bench.

Mia Yahner, who made the all-tournament team, had six points as Lexi Cloyd, Marielle St. Germain, and Mya Leggett-Carlin all added four points each. Kaitlyn Youngs and Braelyn Blakeslee had two points each as the whole Trojans lineup scored in their first win of the season.

UV’s Shyla Roberts led the team with 11 points with most points coming in the second half. Taylor Hitt finished with four points off the bench, helping the Storm make their first field goal in the second quarter after Kora Johnson made three free-throws as the team’s only points in the first quarter.

Myriah Taylor also finished with four points as Yana Hyrlina and Allisyn Daniell both made one free-throw.

Varsity Boys’ Consolation:

Stamford/Jefferson 67 - UV 55

After tying the game at 52 in late in the fourth quarter, the UV Storm boys could not contain Stamford/Jefferson, who went on a 15-3 run to secure the victory. UV did see some excitement just before halftime as Seth Meagley banked in a half court shot in the final second of the first half to give the Storm a brief 33-31 lead at the break.

Denzel Peter, who made the all-tournament team, led the Storm with 16 points, scoring at least two points in each quarter. Taylor Hodge was impressive off the bench as he hit three three-pointers and helped the Storm tie the game at 52 with making both free-throws and stealing the ball and adding two more points.

Hodge finished with 13 points as Declan Potter added nine points and Preston York with seven points.

Seth Meagley had the three at the buzzer as Braden Golliver, Zack Welch, and Kaleb Smith each had two points.

Varsity Girls’ Championship:

Norwich 80 - Sherburne-Earlville 21

Norwich built strong intensity early on and kept going from there, playing aggressive defense and strong offense to defeat its neighboring opponent.

Brooklyn Burke, tournament MVP, had a team-high 22 points with six three-pointers and had nine steals.

Arabella Dwyer finished with 19 points off the bench and had nine rebounds.

Josey Ryan, all-tournament team, added 16 points and 11 assists to post a double-double. Emma Urgo, all-tournament, also posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Brynley Ryan and Emma Baker both added three points as Alivia Burrell and Marina Arraez had two points each.

S-E’s Abbie Green, Peyton Darragh, and Natalie Knickerbocker all led the Timberwolves with four points each as Morgan Mikalunas hit a three in the second quarter. Kendall Hill, Brynn Shaver, and Marley Goedel all finished with two points. Mikalunas and Hill both made the all-tournament team.

Varsity Boys’ Championship:

Norwich 90 - South Kortright-Andes 42

The Purple Tornado boys’ basketball team dominated against its Class D opponent. Norwich posted at least 21 points in the first three quarters, with 26 in the first eight minutes of play and continued from there.

Everyone in the Norwich lineup scored at least two points on the night.

Eighth grader Brevin Bennett led the Purple Tornado with 14 points, including four three-pointers.

Aiden Youngs, tournament MVP, hit three three-pointers to finish with 13 points. Carmine Pastore had 10 points as Cooper Chrystie and Andrew Mirabito both added nine points as Carter Chrystie had eight.

Brayden Adoff and Gavin Burrell both finished with seven points off the bench while Kassen Stubb, all-tournament team, added five points and Owen Olds had four points in the final quarter. Michael Brunick and Collin Reid both had a bucket in the fourth quarter.
