Oxford girls defeat Hoosic Valley in A B Doyle Tournament

OXFORD— The Oxford Blackhawks girls’ basketball program returned for the second and final day of the Al B. Doyle basketball Tournament.

The Blackhawks JV team defeated Hoosic Valley in the tournament championship game as Varsity took on Hoosic Valley in the consolation game. Oxford secured a close 39-24 victory against the Hawks.

Hoosic Valley started off with a 8-0 run with a few three’s before Oxford got on the board at the 4:15 mark in the first quarter as Jordan Palmer made the shot and was fouled.

After the Hawks made it a 10-2 run and took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, the Blackhawks shifted gears. Palmer stayed hot offensively, hitting a three as Reese Tefft and Paige Rickard played great defense to get the offense to finish shots. Arielle Ross and Aubrey Rickard also contributed with a few steals and Aubrey was great at forcing jump balls. Raine Rovente and Margaret Rovente were great rebounders.

The Blackhawks held Hoosic Valley to just four points in the second quarter to take a 19-14 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Hawks threatened with a few three-pointers again, but Oxford got back on defense and powered through offensively to lead by 10 points at the end of the third quarter. Jordan Palmer and Emmalee Reiss made a great teamwork play towards the end of the quarter as well.

From there, Oxford secured the victory, holding the Hawks to just a three-pointer in the final eight minutes of play.

Paige Rickard, an all-tournament selection, led the Blackhawks with 15 points and also had eight rebounds.

Jordan Palmer finished with seven points as Margaret Rovente and Emmalee Reiss both added four points.

Margaret Rovente also had nine rebounds and five steals.

Olivia Oliver finished with three points as Raine Rovente, Reese Tefft, and Aubrey Rickard all had two points each in the win.

Moravia defeated Walton/Downsville in the tournament championship game 53-32. Walton junior Grace Walley needed just 16 points following the win over Oxford to reach 1000 points and her moment came towards the end of the third quarter, banking a three-pointer to make it 1,001. She added on in the final eighth minutes of the contest, despite the deficit.

Oxford (3-3) hosts Harpursville on Friday at 7:15 p.m. to resume MAC league play.
