Afton girls come away with close win against UV

AFTON— In their first game since December 16, the Afton Crimson Knights girls’ basketball team hosted the Unadilla Valley Storm in a MAC league matchup on Monday night. Both teams were off to a slow start until Afton’s Rylee Rupakus got going and drove the offense. Rupakus and the Crimson Knights defeated UV in a close 39-37 victory.

The Storm were limited early on in the first three quarters before Shyla Roberts helped get UV back into the game with help from Kora Johnson, and Myriah Taylor, but the Crimson Knights found a way to take the overall victory.

Rylee Rupakus led all scorers with 22 points for the Crimson Knights, including two three-pointers, 11 points in the third quarter and finished strong with six points in the final eight minutes.

Ariana Florance and Appalonia Bushaw both added six points off the bench as McKenna Ross had three points and Megan Racine with two points.

Shyla Roberts posted another double-double with a team-high 20 points, where she went eight-for-12 at the free-throw line and had 12 points alone in the fourth quarter, and a team-high 14 rebounds.

Myriah Taylor, who also came off a great game prior in the Milford Tournament, had seven points as Kora Johnson finished with five points.

Taylor Hitt added three points as Allisyn Daniell had two points in the first quarter.

Afton (4-3) heads to Harpursville on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. as UV (2-5) hosts Oxford at the same time.
