NY State Police: Suspect attempted to grab trooper's gun during domestic dispute

GREENE – A New York state trooper responding to a 911 call involving an active domestic dispute was caught in a life and death situation shortly after arriving on the scene, when a suspect reportedly attempted to grab the officer's gun.

The altercation occurred in and then outside of a residence and before any other law enforcement or emergency services had yet arrived on scene.

The incident took place at approximately 3:31 p.m., on Sunday, January 4, after the Chenango County 911 Center received an emergency call. Police and ambulance services were dispatched to a residence on English Lane in Greene after the caller reported an ongoing domestic dispute.

A Greene resident, 25-year-old Cagan Sodan was charged following the incident with a number of crimes including second degree attempted robbery, a Class C felony; second degree assault, a Class E felony; reckless endangerment; fourth degree criminal mischief and obstructing government administration, misdemeanors.

“Upon arrival, a trooper encountered an adult male who was uncooperative and became combative during the investigation. During the encounter, Sodan attempted to grab the trooper’s service weapon from its holster,” reported the New York State Police in a statement.

According to police, “The trooper was able to restrain Sodan and take him into custody. Sodan did have an injury to his hand that he sustained from punching a window, prior to his encounter with the trooper. The trooper was not injured,”

Sodan was transported to the Norwich State Police station for processing then transported to the Chenango County Correctional Facility. He was arraigned in court and remanded to the jail until his next court date on January 8.

All charges are allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent of the charges until proven guilty in a court of law.
