SOUTH NEW BERLIN - A single-vehicle crash on State Route 23 Wednesday morning resulted in a deadly vehicle fire, according to Acting Town of New Berlin Police Chief David Kaminski.

Kaminski said a 911 call came in at about 10:50 a.m. reporting a serious crash along State Route 23 near Sheff Road. The South New Berlin Fire Department and Town of New Berlin Police responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, first responders found a pickup truck engulfed in flames. The vehicle appeared to have left the roadway and traveled a distance from the road before striking a group of trees, Kaminski reported.

Police said the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The New York State Police and the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office assisted New Berlin Police and conducted an accident reconstruction investigation at the scene.

“At this point it is still under investigation,” Kaminski said. He added that speed may have been a factor.

The roadway was closed for a period of time during the response and emergency crews remained on scene for several hours, departing at about 3 p.m.
