Norwich girls pull away in second half to defeat Oneonta

NORWICH — The Norwich Purple Tornado girls' basketball team hosted STAC opponent and rivals Oneonta on Tuesday night. After a competitive first half between both teams, Norwich pulled away in the second half to defeat Oneonta 55-37.
It was a close first half with Norwich once leading 13-7 and then taking a brief one-point 19-18 lead at halftime.
Neither team knew what to expect from the other to come out for the second half, but Norwich came out strong for the third quarter and did not stop there.
The Purple Tornado started the third quarter in a 8-0 run and even held Oneonta to just four points within those eight minutes of play.
Norwich took full control from there and built a larger lead in the fourth quarter, going up as much as 20 points at one time before Oneonta traded shots late in the game.
Emma Urgo was phenomenal from start to finish in every aspect from scoring points on offense to blocking shots on defense. She led the team with 23 points and went five-for-nine at the free-throw line.
Brooklyn Burke had a solid game as well and finished with 10 points.
Josey Ryan continued to quickly drive the ball down the court and inside the paint to score and had nine points.
Brynley Ryan played aggressive defense and helped make plays for Josey to score. Brynley added seven points.
Kerragan Reid finished with six points and had excellent rebounds and good skill on the jump balls.
Norwich (8-1) heads to Sus Valley on Friday night, where they look to avenge the loss from Jan. 8.
