NEW BERLIN— The Unadilla Valley Storm girls' basketball team honored its Class of 2026 seniors prior to warmups on Tuesday night. Congratulations to Myriah Taylor, Yana Hyrlina, Taylor Hitt, and Kora Johnson.
UV honored their seniors well as they came away with a close 40-35 victory against Gilboa-Conesville-Roxbury.
GCR had a small run going in the first quarter, where they went up 5-0 and then 9-2 when Myriah Taylor put UV on the board halfway through the quarter.
Myriah Taylor had four points in total within those eight minutes of opening play before Allisyn Daniell and Shyla Roberts added baskets to put UV within one.
GCR made a long pass with 10 seconds left to score to take a 11-8 lead at the end of one.
GCR also out-rebounded UV early on before the Storm started catching on in attempt to flip the outcome to make it more 50/50.
The Storm took the lead with under four minutes to play in the first half as Avery Golliver's basket put UV up one.
Daniell made two free-throws and Kora Johnson had a nice block on defense to help UV take a 20-16 lead at the break.
GCR quickly tied the game up at 20 all coming out for the second half.
However, GCR was called for traveling violations at crucial parts of the contest. UV took advantage of the turnovers to build a seven-point lead, going into the final quarter.
The Storm built their lead to 12, but GCR made it a five-point game with a crucial three and then stole the ball and made it a three-point game with under 30 seconds left to play.
UV could not score on their possession and hoped to make one final stop on defense.
GCR was called on a travel violation 15.5 seconds left, giving the Storm back the ball for at least one more time to extend the lead.
Shyla Roberts made both free-throws, which secured the victory.
Roberts led the team with 13 points, including 11 points in the second half.
Myriah Taylor followed with 10 points, all within the first three-quarters.
Allisyn Daniell added eight points as Kora Johnson had four points.
Avery Golliver finished with three while Taylor Hitt had two points.
UV (3-8) hosts Greene this evening at 7 p.m.
