Norwich girls advance with big win over CV

NORWICH— It was an amped up Friday night inside Norwich High School’s Jack Jones Gymnasium for Norwich/Chenango Valley sectional doubleheader basketball with the stands full of both the hometown crowd and rowdy Chenango Valley visitors. The Norwich Purple Tornado girls’ basketball team played Chenango Valley in the first game, where the Purple Tornado dominated with a 48-24 victory to advance to the Section IV, Class A semifinals game.

Norwich held Chenango Valley to just 10 points in the first half and did not allow any points in the third quarter. Chenango Valley tried to make a comeback in the final eight minutes, but Norwich had already built a solid lead to move on.

Brooklyn Burke went off for the Purple Tornado, hot off the bench with 14 points, including seven points in the fourth quarter.

Kerragan Reid also had a strong finish with nine points as Brynley Ryan added seven points with two three’s.

Emma Urgo chipped in six points while Arabella Dwyer had five points off the bench.

Josey Ryan finished with four points and McKenzie Brunick added two free-throws in the fourth quarter while Alivia Burrell had a single free-throw in the first in the win.

Norwich heads to face second seeded Johnson City on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Class A semifinals. The winner of this matchup will play the winner of Maine-Endwell/Waverly on Sunday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m.

Admission will be charged for both the semis and the finals through GoFan Digital Ticketing.
