SHERBURNE – February brought with it bitterly cold temperatures, which led to higher electricity usage throughout much of the northeast. For residents throughout New York State, this has caused sticker shock on regular utility bills.
For residents on Sherburne Electric, this shock was no different. “This winter has been bitter cold combined with wind resulting in high heat costs. If you heat with electricity, especially baseboard electric resistance heat, you will see a high bill in March,” Sherburne Mayor William Acee cautioned.
According to Acee, the issue is a multi-faceted one. In addition to the higher electricity demand, the problem is exacerbated by the increased need for natural gas. “Natural gas is also used to generate electricity. When it’s cold, that is redirected to the heat load. Less gas is used for electric generation.” Natural gas, Acee explained is one of the least expensive means of electric generation. When it is being used for the heat load instead, more expensive electric generation, like diesel is required to fulfill the needs of the electric grid.
