SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Planning Board met on Tuesday night and continued the discussion of the proposed battery storage facility on Knapp Road in the Town of Sherburne.
Last month, the town held a public hearing on the battery storage facility. Town residents overwhelmingly came out against the project citing health and safety concerns.
A six-month moratorium was passed, which provides a legal pause on permitting and approval of the project. Town of Sherburne Supervisor Charles Mastro explained that the town is using that time to create a local law that will set clear safety rules and regulations. The town is planning to extend the moratorium for an additional six months to give themselves time to enact the local law. They plan to hold a public hearing in November of 2026 to present the new battery storage law.
“It is important for residents to understand that New York State Law allows battery energy storage facilities in communities like ours. The town does not have the legal authority to permanently prohibit these projects if an application meets state and local requirements,” Mastro said in a recent update to the town.
