NORWICH - March 29, 2026 is National Vietnam Veterans Day, a day to honor Vietnam era Veterans for their service in a war often misunderstood by citizens at home. Many were treated with disrespect and hatred when they returned home after bravely serving their country as members of United States military forces. The day also recognizes their families who struggled back home, those working the support lines, and even other soldiers stationed elsewhere during that time.

On March 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the Norwich American Legion family of Post 189 and the VFW 2789 Auxiliary wish to honor those veterans and their families by inviting them to the American Legion Post at 29 Sheldon St., Norwich. Morning coffee and pastries will be served as well as a soup and sandwich lunch.

“Truths and Myths of the Vietnam War,” a 47 minute documentary film produced by a group of Atlanta veterans will be shown. Veterans attending will be encouraged to share their experiences and thoughts with each other and community members who would like to learn first hand “truths” about a war fought by about 2.7 million Americans during 16 years of U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia. More than 58,000 were killed and some 300,000 wounded. About one third of those brave veterans are living today.

Members of the American Legion and the VFW will be present to answer questions and provide information about services available to area veterans. Also expected to be present are N.Y.S. Assemblyman and Marine Veteran Joseph Angelino, Joseph Coe, Norwich Mayor Jeffrey and Hospice representative Navy Veteran Joseph Sugar.

Everyone is encouraged to fly the U.S. flag on March 29 to honor those who served and as a way to thank the veterans and all who made sacrifices during one of the longest wars in U. S. history.
