Norwich St. Baldrick's raises more than $65,000 for childhood cancer research at annual community event

NORWICH - The Norwich St. Baldrick's event held on Saturday, March 14, was able to raise a growing total of $65,715. Donations are still coming in and contributions will be accepted until the end of the year online. This is the most they have so far raised since the event began, topping last year's record of $63,255.

There were lots of people in attendance including NY State Senator Peter Oberacker who made an appearance to show support for the cause.

Volunteer Event Organizer (VEO) Marissa Phelps said, “We're incredibly grateful for the community support that we get, both through volunteers and participants, but also our corporate donors.”

The St. Baldrick's Foundation registers local youth for what they call “Honored Kids,” to give their families a platform to share their story, raise awareness, and inspire fundraising.

At this year's Norwich St. Baldrick's event, the honored kid was two year old Ace Barrows, who was diagnosed with type of cancer, Rhabdomyosarcoma, last March.

“This year our Honored Kid was Ace Barrows, and his family attended to share his story, and he attended to remind us all why we're there,” said Phelps.

Phelps shared that at the event his aunt, Myah Baker, made a spur of the moment decision to shave her head, raising several hundreds of dollars on the spot.
