Oxford softball hangs on to defeat B-G in home opener

OXFORD— Coming off a stellar game against UV, the Oxford Blackhawks softball team was right back in action to host the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats in a MAC league game. Oxford had a 6-2 lead after the fourth inning, but B-G erased the deficit and got within one after the sixth, but Marshman and the Blackhawks held on to win 6-5.
B-G got on the board in the top of the first as Breanna Casey had an infield single to lead off the inning before stealing second and advancing to third on Alessandra Cafasso’s single to center.
Cafasso stole second and B-G had two runners in scoring position with two outs. Casey came in to score on a passed ball before Oxford’s Lily Marshman struck out Madisyn Peck to end the inning.
Oxford took a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning as Emmalee Reiss had a two-out, two-run single to center and then a bases-loaded walk brought in a run.
B-G got one back in the bottom of the third as Casey tripled to lead off the inning and came in to score on Cafasso’s RBI single.
Oxford scored three more runs to extend the lead as Reagan Long doubled to center to bring in two and then Lily Marshman singled to bring in Long.
B-G got closer with a run in the fifth on a steal of home before adding two more runs in the top of the sixth.
Tori Suda singled to center to start before advancing to second on a wild pitch. She went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Emma Kinter before scoring on Kaylin Furgason’s one-out, two-run RBI single to center.
Marshman got two strikeouts to end the damage and then got a groundout and two strikeouts in the top of the seventh as Oxford hung on to the one-run victory.
Marshman worked a complete game, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, two walks, and struck out nine batters.
Hope Blackman got the start for B-G, going four innings, allowing six runs on five hits, six walks, and had seven strikeouts. Alessandra Cafasso came in to finish the game, going two innings, allowing two hits and struck out three batters.
Oxford (2-0) hosts Sidney on April 14 at 4:30 p.m. while B-G (0-2) continues its road-trip at UV on the same day and time.
