Norwich softball celebrates 2026 season with end of season banquet

NORWICH— The Norwich Purple Tornado softball team hosted its end of season banquet on Tuesday night.

Norwich finished its 2026 season with a 6-10 record.

“This year’s season was one of the coldest and wettest seasons I have experienced,” Coach Joe Cirigliano said. “We finished STAC league play with a 5-6 record. We always play stellar defense at Chenango Valley, where we won 1-0. We finished one win away from making sectionals. We attempted to reschedule games with BG and Greene that were on our schedule but were postponed and couldn’t be made up.”

Cirigliano added that the team finished with an overall .274 batting average, which was an improvement from last year’s .247. The team also improved on hits this season with 120 from last year’s 96.

Defensively, the team cut errors in half from last season as well as cut down on the earned runs against from 7.93 down to 3.925 runs against this season.

Coach Joe Cirigliano on each of his players:

Nolah Montgomery: first full season playing varsity; recorded five outs and an assist in the outfield and was also an extra hitter at times; had six singles and one double. Finished the season with a .269 batting average with a sac-fly against Chenango Forks.

Carolyn Wright: first season playing varsity; a reliable utility player wherever needed on the defense; finished the season with a .432 batting average with 13 singles, two doubles, and one home run. She drove in seven runs and led the team with a .533 on base percentage and stole seven bases.

Kira Quattrocchi: first season playing varsity; pitched 62 innings this season and started 10 out of the 16 games, won five games and earned one save. Struck out 54 batters and finished with a 2.823 earned run average. Finished the season with a .200 batting average with seven singles, two doubles, and nine RBIs.

Marina Arraez (foreign exchange student from Spain): first ever season playing softball; had first hit against Oneonta on senior night, showed great improvement from start to finish with a great smile on her face.

Abby Telesky: second season; left fielder that led the team in putouts with 15 balls and two assists of getting runners out.

Kerragan Reid: second season on varsity as catcher; very active behind the plate and threw out six girls attempting to steal; had 15 hits, including 14 singles and a triple with a .326 batting average and a team-high 13 runs batted in.

Bri Cirigliano: second season on varsity; pitched 45 innings with one win and three saves. Struck out 47 batters and finished with a 5.44 earned run average. Recorded her 100th career strikeout during the season. Finished with a .312 batting average with 15 hits, including 11 singles, three doubles, and a triple. She had five RBIs and scored 15 runs and had an on-base percentage of .450 leading the team with 10 walks. Led the team with 18 stolen bases.

Loralee Brown: four seasons on varsity; catcher and outfield; finished with a .273 batting average with 11 singles and a triple with nine RBIs.

Shaelyn Rice: four seasons on varsity; first base; had over 100 putouts in the field and played every inning at first; had nine singles offensively and a double along with seven RBIs. Finished the season with a .283 batting average and made the SFCU all-tournament team.

Brooke Rogers: three seasons on varsity; played second base; helped with 21 putouts and had 20 assists; had 14 singles offensively with five runs batted in and finished with a .359 batting average and a .479 on base percentage. Awarded the team’s most improved player of the 2026 season.

Ava Cirigliano: four-year starter on varsity who never missed a game nor practice; key contributor to the Purple Tornado defense over the past four seasons, where she recorded over 250 put outs and assists from the shortstop position over her 65 varsity games played. Turned 15 double plays and was even a part of a triple play in the extra innings game against Oneonta this season. She had 61 hits with nine doubles, six triples, and two home runs, along with 63 stolen base attempts over her 65 games played. This season, she finished with a .354 batting average with 17 hits with four doubles, two triples, and an inside-the-park home run at Harpursville. She stole 15 bases and drove in five runs. Awarded the Most Valuable Player of the 2026 season.
