Norwich Garden Club: Calling all gardeners
The Norwich Garden Club started as a women’s civic organization and has spent 93 years beautifying the downtown area. The group often installs flowers on public streets, (above) and hangs flower baskets along with sponsoring a number of community events. (Submitted photo)
CHENANGO COUNTY - Come and join your fellow gardeners at the annual flower show on the grounds of the Chenango County Fair, which will run from Aug. 12 through 16. Bring in your "best in show" bloom from an annual, perennial, flowering bulb or shrub and enter it into the horticulture section. Got a big garden? You can enter as many as 10 blooms. Entry forms for horticulture are available at fair Gate No. 1 on East Main Street from July 27 to Aug. 8 and must be filled out before entering your blooms on Aug. 10 and 11.
Or … you can express your creativity in the design section. The theme, "Gardening Reflections," will honor our country's 250th birthday by reflecting on the focus of gardening at significant periods in our long history. This section will feature four classes which address periods in our history dominated by survival gardening as opposed to prosperous times where gardens were decorative and expansive. The class titles are Primitive Pharmacy, Boston Tea Party, Shades of Glory and Victory Garden Harvest.
The design section offers the opportunity to interpret a topic as you visualize it and express that vision with flowers. The design classes have only four entries per class, except for Fairy Gardens, which allows unlimited entries. If you are interested in learning about design and how to enter, there will be a public meeting on fair preparation at 6 p.m. June 22 at Guernsey Memorial Library in Norwich.
This year the photography section will be divided into three groups: a photo of a single bloom, a vegetable still life and critters in the garden. There will be only four photos per group, so if you would like to enter, pick up your entry form early!
