What makes a good marriage?
Gay marriage has been a topic which has been lingering around in the air for a few years, and I have to honestly say that I’m sick of hearing about it.
I’m sick of hearing our President spend his time defending the fact that marriage should only be between a man and a woman and that is it. No exceptions, no toleration.
But is it really that big of a deal? Last I knew, marriage was something shared between two people who loved each other enough to want to spend the rest of their lives together. But does that really happen anymore?
Our divorce rate is about 60 percent in America today. Sixty percent!? Why support marriage, gay or straight, with a divorce rate that high? When did we lose sight of the TRUE meaning of marriage?
President George W. Bush gave a speech on Monday about how straight marriage protects children and “serves the interest of all,” but to be honest, if you’re really that worried about whether or not Adam and Steve are planning to run away to Vermont to wed, that’s a whole different problem in itself. With a war going on where thousands of people are dying, with all of the children that are being born to unfit parents who either abandon or beat them, or the large number of homeless and hungry families in our country, why is gay marriage such a concern?
People say that gays should not adopt children because it’s not fair to raise them into that kind of lifestyle. But it’s OK for a straight couple to have kids and raise them on welfare and send them to school with dirty clothes and no food? Come on. Let’s focus on the real problems here.
I feel that instead of wasting so much time judging others and keeping them from being completely happy, we should be focusing our energy on taking care of our country - because we have a lot of work to do here.
I believe in God and I believe he made Adam and Eve for a reason. But homosexuality goes back to Biblical times too. It was frowned upon and hidden in fear of being killed, but it happened. I believe that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, and Easter was his resurrection. But I also believe that it is not our place to judge. So if people like George W. Bush want to practice being a good Christian, maybe they should practice what they preach.
If a gay couple wants to get married and share a common name, benefits, and raise children, so be it. Who are we to say that it can’t be a good lifestyle for a child? If they are to be judged, it shouldn’t be by us.
