Youth to work

NORWICH - About 100 qualifying youths hailing from throughout Chenango County will be employed this summer through a $90,780 federal grant awarded recently to the Department of Social Services.

Legislators agreed to receive and allocate the grant during committee meetings last week. DSS will contract with the Office of Employment and Training to monitor the program and with The Place of Norwich to recruit youths and manage the selected work sites. Only youths whose families receive public assistance qualify.

Supervisors from Pharsalia, Lincklaen and Guilford directed that overseers of the grant target youths from all parts of the county to apply for the various jobs, not just from the City of Norwich.

“I need to know that there are kids from across the county involved, because I question that they are,” Alton B. Doyle, R-Guilford, said.
